Mae Loris Hughes

Mae Loris Hughes, a cherished resident of Franklin Health and Rehabilitation Center in Rocky Mount, Virginia, passed away peacefully on September 6, 2024, at the age of 90. Born on May 15, 1934, in Franklin County, Virginia, Loris was a beloved member of her community.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Sally L. Hughes Williamson; her stepfather, Grant Williamson; and her father, Sam Tyree. Loris lived a simple and fulfilling life, spending many years in the home she shared with her mother and stepfather. Known for her warmth and kindness, she easily made friends with both staff and residents during her time at Franklin Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Loris had a deep love for homemaking and was passionate about canning food from the large gardens she tended. Her talents extended to sewing, planting flowers, and cooking. She was renowned for her excellent meals and often delighted in preparing food for her aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Visitors to her home could always expect a hearty meal or a comforting cup of coffee.

Taught by her mother to read, write, and count, Loris possessed a remarkable ability to retell family stories, keeping the rich history of her loved ones alive. Her presence will be greatly missed by her friends and cousins, who fondly remember her kindness and hospitality.
