Michael Smith, Sr.

Michael Lumsden Smith, Sr., 76, of Patterson Avenue, Rocky Mount, Virginia, departed this life on Monday, September 30, 2024, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, Virginia. He was born on July 20, 1948 in Rocky Mount, Virginia to the late William and Lula Smith. Michael was the eldest of 11 children and took his role of big brother to heart. 

Michael attended Lee M. Wade School in Rocky Mount, Virginia. He  had a passion for working on vehicles, was a self-taught, hardworking, successful, honest business man who worked on cars for over 60 years, and his customers thought a lot of him. Michael loved attending drag races, enjoyed cooking, and loved COKES! Michael had a great sense of humor and enjoyed a good laugh. It was a rarity to see Michael without his black cap, black shirt, black pants, and black shoes. 

In addition to his parents, Michael was preceded in death by his sister, Monica Smith; brothers, Elmer Wayne Tyree & Maurice Smith. 

Left to cherish his memory are his two sons whom he loved with all his heart; Michael (Georgia) Smith, Jr. of Rocky Mount, Virginia, Melvin (Karla) Smith of Roanoke, Virginia; three grandchildren, Michael (Abigail) Smith, the 3rd of Oxford, Florida, Terrance Smith of Stamford, CT; and Jordan Smith of Roanoke, Virginia; one great grandson, Michael Smith the 4th, one great-granddaughter, Nevaeh Smith; three brothers, Monty (Lois) Smith of Sarasota, Florida; Mark (Steven) Smith of Santa Cruz, California; Melvin Smith of Roanoke, Virginia; five sisters, Moira (Tommie) Smith of Rocky Mount; Marchalle Smith of Columbus, Ohio; Mona Hairston of Rocky Mount; Mignon Smith of Rocky Mount; and Mia (Chuck) Cobbs of Rocky Mount; a special friend, Elsie Witcher who was by his side to the end; two special cousins, Jimmie and Dave Stovall; and his best friend/brother, Monty who he talked to every day, multiple times per day. 

Michael had a host of family, friends, and customers who will miss him greatly.
