Sheila Marie Hughes

On Thursday, August 24, 2023, God in his infinite wisdom saw fit to call Sheila Marie Hughes from her earthly home to her heavenly home.  She was born in Franklin County on March 13, 1960 to the late Rosie Ann Mattox Hughes.  She was preceded in death by one sister Brenda Michelle Hughes Lumpkins.

Sheila received her education in Franklin County Public Schools. She was a member of Bethel A.M.E. Church.  Sheila had a servant heart and a giving heart.  She volunteered for Stepping Stone Mission to help prepare and serve meals to the hungry.  This carried over to her willingness to assist the kitchen staff at Bethel A.M.E. Church.  As a member of Bethel A.M.E., Sheila worked with the youth, was a part of the Fifth Sunday Choir and the Pastor’s Posse for afternoon services.

Those left to cherish her memory  are her devoted and lifelong friend William (Buck) Burnett, four sisters; Freda Gail Muse, Chris Regina Hughes, Molly Rachelle Alcorn and Mary Elizabeth Hughes all of Rocky Mount, VA; one aunt Bessie Mattox Cook and three uncles; Sandy Joe, John Henry and James “Jay” Mattox, Sr. all of Rocky Mount and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends. She shared a special love with her god children Tierra Hughes, Malik Craighead and Zedric Barnett, a god sister Ada Claybrooks and an honorary son Jamal Berger.
